Firefighters were dispatched to a three-story Locust Hill Avenue home shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 25, when a fire broke out in the walls and ceilings of all three floors, Yonkers Deputy Chief Daniel Flynn said. Crews were on scene within two minutes, Flynn noted. The fire was knocked down and under control by 11:27 p.m.
According to Flynn, four firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze. The building suffered “significant damage.” The cause of the fire is under investigation. The American Red Cross assisted four of the displaced residents, who stayed at the Yonkers Police Athletic League. The other 11 were able to find temporary places to stay.
It is unknown when the residents will be permitted to return to the building.
The fire came less than two hours after a dishwasher caught fire in a Caryl Avenue apartment, prompting an emergency response from the fire department. One firefighter suffered a minor injury, though sprinklers in the building extinguished most of the fire, Flynn said. No one was displaced from the fire.
